Why brat covers work so well for playlists

Playlist covers are shown tiny, often smaller than a thumbnail. Most photos turn into a blur at that size, but a flat color with one or two words stays readable. That's exactly what the brat look is: a bold background and short lowercase text. It also makes a set of playlists look like a matching collection.

Step by step

  1. Open the brat generator.
  2. Type the playlist name in lowercase. Keep it to one to four words; long names get too small.
  3. Choose Square (1:1). Playlist covers are always square, and the generator makes a 1200 × 1200 image, which is plenty sharp.
  4. Pick a color. Brat green for the classic look, or a different color per mood (ideas below).
  5. Set the text size to 60–75% so the words have room around them.
  6. Download as JPG. JPG files are smaller, which helps uploads go through smoothly.

How to upload your cover

Spotify

Open your playlist, choose Edit (or Edit details), tap the cover image and pick your downloaded file. You can only change the cover of playlists you created.

Apple Music

Open your playlist, choose Edit, tap the artwork and select your image from your photos or files.

YouTube Music and others

Options vary by app and change over time. If an app doesn't let you upload a custom cover, you can still use your brat image as the playlist's first video thumbnail or as a post announcing the playlist.

Menus move around between app updates, so if a button isn't where we describe, look for the three-dot menu on the playlist page.

Make a matching set

For a profile that looks designed, make every cover with the same font, text size and blur, and only change the words and color. Pick two or three colors and stick with them. Want different fonts? The brat text generator has eight, including heavier styles for gym playlists.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a playlist cover?

Playlist covers are square. A 1200 × 1200 image, which the brat generator's Square size makes, looks sharp everywhere.

Why won't my playlist cover upload?

Try saving it as JPG instead of PNG to make the file smaller, check that it's square, and make sure you're editing a playlist you created.

Can I use the brat green for my playlist cover?

Yes. Choose the brat green preset (#8ACE00) in the generator. It's a fan-made look, so just don't present your cover as official album artwork.

What should I name a brat playlist?

Short, lowercase and honest works best, like “brat pregame”, “crying in the club” or “gym but make it brat”.
